What GhostCue never does: it does not install an audio driver, does not change your default output device, and does not require BlackHole, FFmpeg, or any other third-party audio tool. Recordings are sent over TLS to the GhostCue service, and no AI provider credentials ever ship inside the app.
Setup

Up and running in four steps

    Create your account

    Sign up on the website and verify your email. New accounts receive free welcome credits so you can try everything before paying.

    Copy your access key

    Open your account dashboard and generate your private access key. This key is how the desktop app links to your account — treat it like a password.

    Install and activate

    On macOS, open the .dmg and drag GhostCue to Applications. On Windows, run the installer. Launch the app and paste your access key when asked. The key is stored in your operating system's secure storage, never in a plain file.

    Run the audio setup check

    GhostCue plays a short audible probe and confirms it can hear your system audio. Once the check passes, you are ready — the overlay listens only when you tell it to.

Permissions you will be asked for

On macOS

macOS asks for a System Audio Recording privacy grant the first time GhostCue captures audio, and a Screen Recording grant for screen-context answers. Approve both in the dialogs (or later under System Settings → Privacy & Security). Because the app is signed with a stable developer identity, these grants survive updates.

On Windows

No extra permission prompts are needed for audio — WASAPI loopback is built into Windows. If SmartScreen shows a warning on a freshly released version, choose More info → Run anyway; the installer and app are Authenticode signed. Your access key is protected by Windows DPAPI secure storage.

How GhostCue handles your data

Capture stays local until you submit

Audio and screen captures are bounded, recorded locally, and only submitted over TLS when you trigger an answer. Nothing streams in the background, and a visible recording badge always precedes captured audio.

The overlay stays out of screen shares

The GhostCue window is excluded from screen capture, so it does not appear in Zoom, Teams, or browser screen shares. It keeps no taskbar button and never steals focus from your interview window.

FAQ

Common questions

The audio setup check says it heard nothing. What now?

Make sure something is actually playing sound during the probe and that your output device is not muted. If you switched output devices (for example to Bluetooth headphones), run the check again — GhostCue validates the route you are actually using.

Do I need to install BlackHole, FFmpeg, or a virtual audio device?

No. GhostCue uses the audio capture APIs built into macOS 14.2+ and Windows 10/11 directly. It never changes your default output device.

A keyboard shortcut isn't working.

Another application has probably registered the same global shortcut. GhostCue shows a conflict notice instead of silently overriding the other app — pick a different binding in the app settings.

How do I update GhostCue?

Download the latest installer from this page and install it over your existing copy. Your activation and audio setup state carry over — you will not need to re-enter your access key.

Is Linux supported?

Not yet. GhostCue currently supports macOS 14.2+ on Apple Silicon and x64 Windows 10 build 19041+ / Windows 11.
